POSITION SUMMARY:    

This role will be Hybrid out of our Shelton, CT office. 

Reporting directly to the Manager of Packaging Development, you will be responsible for identifying, leading, and executing packaging development initiatives, with a distinct focus on Continuous Improvement.  These projects will be focused on delivering cost savings to our Brands. This role will drive packaging optimization initiatives, including material reductions, process efficiencies, and supplier collaborations, while ensuring product integrity and brand standards.

The Packaging Engineer will proactively analyze cost-saving opportunities, support sustainability initiatives, and enhance supply chain efficiencies through innovative packaging solutions. This position will serve as a key member of cross-functional teams, evaluating the feasibility of cost-reduction concepts and ensuring successful project execution. The individual will track project progress against established timelines and milestones while providing strategic guidance and coaching to team members involved in CIP initiatives.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage assigned package development projects, working with Brand and project teams, to meet category objectives and project ship to trade dates
  • Lead Ideation Sessions: Facilitate brainstorming workshops and cross-functional collaboration meetings to identify and develop CIP (Continuous Improvement Process) projects that drive cost savings and operational efficiencies.
  • Drive Multiple Projects Simultaneously: Oversee the execution of several cost-saving initiatives at various stages, ensuring projects meet deadlines and business objectives while maintaining compliance with brand and quality standards.
  • Analyze and Identify Cost-Saving Opportunities: Utilize data analytics, supplier insights, and industry trends to pinpoint packaging and process optimization opportunities that align with business objectives.
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Partner with Procurement, Operations, M&D, and Brand teams to develop and implement CIP projects that enhance efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Deliver Impactful and Persuasive Presentations: Effectively communicate project proposals, findings, and recommendations to leadership, suppliers, and cross-functional teams through compelling data-driven presentations.
  • Monitor and Report Project Performance: Track progress and communicate monthly to stakeholders : key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial impact to yearly goals.
  • Lead Sustainability Initiatives: Drive sustainable packaging improvements by reducing material usage, increasing recyclability, and implementing innovative eco-friendly solutions that align with company sustainability goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide packaging options. Develop, engineer, and test packaging components and modify as necessary to meet: consumer requirements, functional parameters, cost targets and manufacturing & shipping requirements .Responsible for developing feasibility assessments ensuring package optimization and commercial satisfaction
  • Provide technical input to package design process and assure package designed for manufacturing acceptability, while realizing desirable aesthetic elements

 

 

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must have the ability to manage third party relationships (e.g. outside design consultants, inventors, suppliers, etc.)
  • Must have the ability to guide laboratory support personnel as required to accomplish a task
  • Effective verbal / written communication, interpersonal. Ability to clearly communicate technical and non-technical information via verbal presentations and in writing
  • Must be a highly credible individual, think and act independently to make sound decisions
  • Must be capable of quickly establishing relationships both internally and externally
  • Promote a mindset of innovation and efficiency across the organization, fostering best practices and knowledge sharing related to packaging and process improvements.
  • Must exhibit a true sense of urgency in responding to customers
  • Must be able to communicate issues effectively to technical and non-technical personnel. (Brand, Finance, Creative, Manufacturing)
  • Must be able to work effectively with regional and/or global teams composed of individuals with technical and non-technical backgrounds
  • Travel domestically and internationally as required on assigned projects. Travel requirements are 10 to 20% per month, which may include overnight travel.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BS in Mechanical, Package or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent technical degree
  • Minimum of 6 years of package development experience preferred, ideally with consumer products companies.
  • Knowledge of packaging components and properties such as; aerosols, pumps, closures, bottles, tubes, flexible films and lamination, paperboard (folding cartons, cards, labels) plastic processing (injection and extrusion blow molding and cast and blown films
  • Experience dealing with packaging component suppliers, standard test methods as ASTM, GMPs OTC test and protocols
  • Must be able to effectively organize and manage workflow of multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic environment
  • Must have good aesthetic “innovative” design skills.
  • Must be able to demonstrate project management to realize the order, importance, and impact of appropriate project activities and maintain Packaging commitments to project scheduling
  • Must have the ability to prioritize and organize workload on multiple programs of low-to-medium complexity to complete on time
  • Must have the ability to develop and implement schedules and ensure that engineering procedures are followed.
  • Must have the ability to evaluate design concepts and prove out feasibility.
  • Must have the ability to manage assigned projects, monitoring the status of all elements affecting the outcome of the program
  • Good computer skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Excellent organizational, prioritizing, problem-solving and follow up skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks / projects simultaneously

QUALITY ASSURANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Colleagues are responsible for their own quality and that of colleagues within their span of control. 
  • Colleagues are responsible to follow all established Quality procedures and instructions. 
  • Notify supervision for corrective action if and when defects are found and/or parts/processes do not conform to specifications.

The salary range for this position is $84,000 - $110,000.  Actual base salary offered to a candidate may vary based upon factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance.
