Position Summary

Under the direction of the packaging manager, works with minimal supervision to develop packaging solutions for the brands assigned in Edgewell’s personal care product portfolio supporting both the Wet One’s, Shave Prep and Sun Care categories. This individual will be the lead packaging developer in support of innovation, cost savings and base business continuity projects. This position will serve as a key contributing member on cross functional business teams and support the development of product/package concepts from exploration through feasibility and ultimately implementation.  The individual must be a self-starter who will monitor progress against timelines and deliverable due dates. 

  • A strong member of the Packaging Engineering team that will partner with both internal and external customers, to ensure that we meet all packaging requirements supporting our business teams.
  • A fast-paced position that will participate in a wide array of packaging events that highlight the ability to problem solve, develop technical reports and present information.
  • Accountable for meeting all assigned Packaging Engineering deliverables.
     

Essential Function

  • Manage assigned Package Development projects, working with Brand and project teams, to meet category objectives and project ship to trade dates.
  • Hold discussions during various types of team meeting’s, communicate technical issues and details to the project team and management.
  • Develop, engineer, and test packaging components and modify as necessary to meet: consumer requirements, functional parameters, costing targets, manufacturing & shipping requirements.
  • Execute new package designs and perform package component testing and qualification, working with suppliers, from engineering prints to models & prototypes, through to unit and production tooling.
  • Provide packaging options and risk mitigation strategies associated with each.
  • Provide technical input to package design process and assure package designed for manufacturing acceptability, while realizing desirable aesthetic elements.
  • Demonstrates ability to problem solve and troubleshoot in an automated production environment.
  • Will utilize appropriate investigative tools (i.e. test results), good engineering design principles, and GMP’s when investigating issues and recommending corrective actions.
  • Work with manager to ensure the Packaging development process is functioning efficiently by assessing current processes and identifying ways to streamline or improve. 
  • Support product development and quality related projects: with internal functional partners and external suppliers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with cross functional groups located both internally and externally.
  • Creates and presents reports for management, and other internal groups.  Reports include trip, supplier audit, and current status.
  • Support investigation of consumer complaints (customer/consumer) to meet applicable standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to write, review, revise and approve New Packaging specifications, Bill Of Materials, Packaging Assembly Specs
     

 

 

Specific Accountabilities

  • Efficiently organize and manage workflow of multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Must demonstrate a general understanding of project management to realize the order, importance, and impact of appropriate project activities and maintain Packaging commitments to project scheduling.
  • Clearly communicate issues effectively to technical and non-technical personnel. (Brand, Finance, Creative, Manufacturing)
  • Work effectively with regional and/or global teams composed of individuals with technical and non-technical backgrounds.
  • Conduct and report results of line and qualification trials for components and finished goods production.
  • Work effectively with Package Engineering, Suppliers, and Manufacturing to assure the creation of timely functional specifications.
  • Write and input specifications in EPC Agile data base system.
  • Ensure the quality of packaging produced is consistent with EPC Quality standards
  • Ability to use data and packaging tools to support recommendations. Will lead projects and assist in root cause investigations.
  • Ability to effectively interact with vendors, contract manufacturers, suppliers and cross functional teams relative to packaging challenges.
  • Ability to review, write, and implement Packaging SOP’s. 
  • Develop strong relationships supporting fast paced projects with Brand Managers, Product Development, Purchasing, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Operations, Suppliers, and EPC Global counterparts.
  • Keep abreast of developments across appropriate packaging and manufacturing technologies.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as required on assigned projects.
    • Travel requirements will range from 10 to 20% per month, which may include overnight travel, local travel to/from Allendale NJ, Shelton, CT, Milford, CT, and Dover, DE.
    • Travel can also include other manufacturing, contract manufacturing and component manufacturing sites.

Project Management Skills Required:

  • Prioritize and organize workload on multiple programs of low-to-medium complexity.
  • Develop and implement schedules and ensure that engineering procedures are followed.
  • Manage assigned projects, monitoring the status of all elements affecting the outcome of the program.
  • Guide laboratory support personnel to complete specific tasks in testing.
  • Clearly communicate technical and non-technical information via verbal presentation and in writing with management, team members and support personnel with normal supervision.

 

Required Skills and Experience

  • BS in Packaging Engineering or related engineering field.
  • 3 years minimum experience working in a packaging related field, ideally with consumer products companies.
  • Knowledge of packaging components and properties such as; aerosols, pumps, closures, bottles, tubes, flexible films and lamination, paperboard (folding cartons, cards, labels) plastic processing (injection and extrusion blow molding and cast and blown films
  • Project Management Experience and structured problem solving; Validation; DOE; Root Cause Analysis
  • Demonstrated above-average performance as a Packaging Engineer with excellent leadership potential. 
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Good computer skills – Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, CAD a plus

 

 

 

 

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience presenting project plans to Senior Management
  • Leading and collaborating with Global cross-functional teams
  • Good problem solving and time Management skills
  • Working knowledge of purchasing of packaging components
  • Knowledge of Validation of packaging requirements in related industry
  • Experience in an FDA related regulated products a plus

 

Working Relationships

  • Position reports to Sr. Manager of Global Packaging
  • Close relationships required with Product Development, Procurement, Operations, Commercial team, Consumer Affairs, Reliability Engineering,  Corporate Quality, Legal and R&D
  • External engagement will include Suppliers and Contract Manufacturers

 

Work Environment

  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time (line trials, auditing)
  • Ability and willingness to travel, as in the execution of the duties of this position the employee may travel up to approximately 20%, or slightly more, of their work time
  • Work schedules may vary from typical business hours
  • Exposure to health risks or conditions that may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment
