This position reports directly to the Manager, Quality Control and is primarily responsible for coordinating the completion of all microbiological activities for an OTC drug manufacturing facility. This is where we manufacture our sun screens, (Hawaiian Tropic/Banana Boat) and shaving gels, (Edge).



  • Supervises QC microbiology laboratory staff
  • Oversees microbial release testing of Raw Materials, In-Process and Finished Goods using a variety of media and techniques (e.g., Pour-plating, Enrichment, Membrane Filtration).
  • Oversees microbial environmental monitoring program and analyzes data for trends.
  • Oversees Preservative Efficacy Testing as part of real-time stability program across sites.
  • Ensures compliance with cGMP, USP, 21CFR 210/211, FDA and Health Canada requirements for laboratory testing and OOS investigations.
  • Performs method transfers for microbial testing.


  • Conducts nonconformance / OOS investigations and participates in cross-departmental team root cause analysis
  • Reviews microbiological data.
  • Maintains laboratory audit readiness.
  • Ensures all laboratory equipment is suitable, maintained, calibrated and adequately qualified, as appropriate.
  • Represents QC Microbiology at various site meetings.
  • Serves as Quality Microbiology SME resource across sites.
  • Liaises with R&D and other manufacturing sites to ensure appropariate microbiological specifications and methods are in place.
  • Recruits, trains and develops personnel.
  • Ensures Inventory Management for chemical reagents, media, supplies and consumables.



  • MS Degree in Microbiology or related field, PhD preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years in a GMP manufacturing facility, including non-sterile products..
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Working knowledge of cGMPs as applicable to Microbiology of nonsterile OTC products.
  • Technical knowledge of microbiological testing techniques.
  • Familiarity with microbial identification techniques, microbial taxonomy and significance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Problem solving skills, including root cause analysis.
  • Knowledge of basic statistics.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Open to occasional off-shift and weekend hours.
  • Good computer skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.  SAP and SharePoint experience preferred.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent prioritization and follow-up skills.
