POSITION SUMMARY:

Perform machine and bench operations pertaining to the fabrication and finish of various grind, hone, and strop wheels.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Mount and dress all wheels; mount wheels on honing spindle and follow through with standard procedure to obtain concentricity and diameter. Groove first and final wheels. For final hone, round edges of wheel lands by means of automatic radius machines. Mount and dress grinding wheels using lathe equipment.
  • Use precision measuring instruments and machine tools. Check work frequently with go-no-gage and correct angle head if necessary to maintain accuracy. Read and interpret blueprints and have specialized training in wheel fabrication and blade making.
  • Maintain check on hardness, ID-OD dimensions, and surface defects on wheels. Reject any wheel not meeting allowable limits. Set-up thread grinder to achieve desired width, depth, and pitch of wheel lands.
  • Prepare necessary reports and maintain accurate records of wheels received from vendors and inventories of wheels on hand.
  • Responsible for the preventive/predictive maintenance of all wheels released to the blade grinding machines.
  • Prepare strops as required including, cutting, mounting, impregnating with abrasive per operating procedure and grinding to specify outside diameter and concentricity. Process all wheels in pairs, and check each set for proper match to avoid mismatching. Maintain an adequate supply of all wheels and strops used in the production area.
  • Monitor and document wheel improvement trials and the set-up and operation of grind lines as required. Place wheels in storage area for future use in domestic or international operations.
  • May require work with Central Tool Room and engineering support groups.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

 

Salary Range:  STLG8 - Starting from $22.78 per hour, based on experience.
