Position Summary

The Research Co-op provides a broad range of technical support to several engineers and scientists primarily in the Schick Research department. This support can be in the form of idea contributions, problem solving, analytical software generation ex.  Data gathering and analysis, running experiments, mechanical design using CAD (Solidworks/Creo), 3D printing and rapid prototyping, and a wide range of mechanical or biomedical skills. The Research Co-op assignments require the co-op to move freely through the majority of departments located in our main plant and both Commerce drive locations.


Position Timeframe: January 2023 - August 2023


Universal Accountabilities

  • The general task duties for this job is to interact with several Research engineers and scientists, receive assignments, complete those assignments and deliver the required data
  • Work individually and in a team environment, includes cross-functional teams
  • Collaborate with lab personal, co-ops, scientist, engineers and management to accomplish designated projects
  • Apply problem-solving skills to resolve scientific and engineering issues
  • Receive training on desired equipment and safety regulations
  • Create detailed reports and presentations on work completed. Present results as required to engineers and related teams.


Specific Accountabilities

  • The Research co-op will work out of the main Milford CT plant as well as 50 & 60 Commerce drive buildings


Required Skills and Experience

  • Junior or Senior level Mechanical Engineering (ME) or Biomedical Engineering (BME) with effective verbal and written communication skills


Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Knowledgeable in mechanical design and 3D CAD programs like SolidWorks and/or PTC Creo
  • Hands on experience beyond university classes ex. Hobbies that require a mechanical aptitude
  • Comfortable learning and operating rapid prototyping equipment (i.e. 3D printing, laser cutting, etc.)
  • Experience with programming and data analysis tools (PowerBI, Minitab, LabView, Python, C#, and/or VBA)
  • Familiarity with electronics principles and electro-mechanical devices
  • Familiarity with machine design principles and machined part drawing creation
  • Past work experience in industry
  • Requires little or no supervision after proper training and explanation of responsibilities
  • Divergent thinker with broad interest in science and technology
  • Technical problem solving and troubleshooting of custom lab equipment
  • Proficient in Windows applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal skills required to work in a project team environment


Working Relationships

  • Candidate will interact with a variety of colleagues including lab partners, engineers, scientists, administrators, managers and directors as well as fellow co-ops, health care providers and security personnel


Work Environment

  • Travel Requirements – Occasional travel between Milford plant and Commerce Drive (also in Milford)
  • General physical requirements include maintaining a workstation with a desktop computer and move between departments locations
  • Report any health and safety issues to supervisor or colleagues
  • Standard 1st Shift
  • Follow all Lab and equipment safety regulations and always use of Personal Protective Equipment as required
