Position Summary

The Applied Technologies/ Tool Engineering co-op will have the opportunity to design and develop new products and equipment in 3D using PTC Creo and/or SolidWorks CAD software.  They will utilize rapid prototyping techniques such as SLA, FDM, and CNC micro machining, to help create concept designs, evaluate potential product changes and develop new uses for additive manufacturing.  Co-Op will be required to run lab equipment and troubleshoot problems in real manufacturing/lab environments. Candidates will primarily support other engineer’s projects in addition to working on some smaller projects for which they may be solely responsible. 


Universal Accountabilities

  • Work on individual designs and support ongoing programs as part of cross-functional teams
  • Apply problem-solving skills to design for efficient manufacturing and assembly
  • Interact with other Product Designers and Manufacturing Engineers and will integrate marketing requirements to ensure that designs are consistent with customer requirements for performance, functionality, style and packaging
  • Use analysis tools, such as finite element analysis and mold filling simulation to predict function, performance, and reliability.
  • Initiate and revise engineering documentation (specifications, standard operating procedures, etc.)
  • Learn and utilize lab equipment including extruders, injection molding machines and additive manufacturing equipment
  • Create and submit engineering change orders (ECO) for the approval of design and documentation.


Specific Accountabilities

  • Candidate will work out of the Milford office


Required Skills and Experience

  • Junior or Senior Engineering student
  • Plastics Engineering Major, Mechanical Engineering Major, or Dual Mechanical Engineering/DIS
  • Knowledge of 3D CAD (PTC Creo or SolidWorks encouraged)
  • Proficient in Windows applications (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Strong interpersonal skills required to work in a project team environment
  • Possess the ability to work independently without the need for constant supervision / guidance.
  • All candidates must be currently eligible to work in the U.S. and provide proper documentation to substantiate.


Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Proficiency in PTC Creo 3D CAD design and surfacing
  • Knowledge of plastic part design and high volume injection molding


Working Relationships

  • Interact with Product Designers, lab technicians, tool engineers and Manufacturing Engineers
  • Reports to senior engineer or manager.


Work Environment

  • Travel Requirements – possible travel between Shelton and Milford offices
  • Physical requirements – sit at a desk and utilize a computer full time 
  • Standard first shift office hours
  • Exposure to health risks or conditions that may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Lab requires safety glasses be worn
