Position Summary

As an integral member of the Dover Team, the Sr. Environmental Health and Safety (HSES) Engineer may develop, implement and oversee the site HSES programs and systems. This includes assisting the HSES manager building relationships with regulatory agencies, working with and leading on-site management with HSES programs.  This position is also responsible for audit programs and monitoring the facility and recommendation for correction of HSES gaps in regulatory and corporate compliance.

Universal Accountabilities

Lead/participate in all HSES compliance initiatives (hazardous waste, air emissions, water, OSHA reporting and record keeping etc.).

Coordinate the implementation of safety rules, policies, safe employee training program.

Coordinate site activities with regulatory agencies to verify compliance, resolve situations, and maintain a cooperative working relationship. Submit and maintain all required regulatory records and reports.

Ensure that required HSES plans are kept current, complete and compliant. Plans include but are not limited to OSHA, SARA, Title III, RCRA, CAA, CWA, Waste Minimization Plan and other regulatory requirements.

Reports any potential violations and implement corrections as needed.

Lead/participate in sustainability programs to recycle as much material as possible to reduce or eliminate landfill costs.

Conducts frequent safety and environmental inspections and procedural audits in the field and have the skills, knowledge and ability to take immediate corrective action if required.

Recommend and implement EHS related capital projects for the site.

Investigate accidents and environmental incidents through root cause analysis and recommend policies, procedures, and/or other actions to correct problems or prevent future occurrence.

  • Assist with coordination of work related injury medical case management and return to work programs.  Direct coordination of medical first responders and provision of first aid treatment.
  • Drive the safety effort and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements and company policies and procedures, i.e. lockout, confined space, fall protection, Personal Protective Equipment. 
  • Actively interacts with all employees to promote safe acts. 
  • Responsible for assisting in the development and adhering to Safety & Health, Environmental, and Training Budgets. 
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and administration of hazard control methods, safety procedures, and security programs. 
  • Measure, audit, and evaluate effectiveness of HSES programs. 
  • Participate in safety committees, including selecting members, conducting training, coordinating activities and empowering members to develop and obtain specific safety goals and objectives. 
  • Cultivate employee commitment to a high-performance culture.
  • Actively participate in other Plant Safety Audits and at corporate safety conferences.
  • Manage and implement the EPC Environmental Policies and Standards at all Playtex sites
  • Support EPC management and EPC EHS&S Council in achieving environmental goals and share best practices throughout EPC organization.
  • Train and coach colleagues for compliance with federal, state and corporate regulations
  • Conduct tours of the complete facilities for government inspectors and audit teams as needed
  • Inspect and assure the proper operation and maintenance of all environmental control systems, including operational documentation, permit compliance and audits of maintenance procedures
  • Coordinates HSES activities with corporate and plant staffs, outside consultants and contractors as required. This includes representing Dover facilities during related audits, meetings and associated projects.
  • Assists plant management in the preparation of annual budget requirements for HSES specific budget.
  • Coordinates and/or provides appropriate and required environmental compliance training to site personnel. Additionally, coordinate and/or conduct specific training to individuals responsible for maintaining environmental control systems or whose job requires specific environmental compliance training.
  • Represents Edgewell facilities at regulatory meetings and/or hearings on HSES matters and any issues related to OSHA findings or environmental site investigation, remediation or site contamination.
  • Responsible for overseeing the disposal practices and management of regulated, hazardous waste, and solid waste streams. This includes ensuring waste characterization, storage, recycling and disposal meets the appropriate regulatory and site requirements. Responsible for meeting any TSD facility audit requirements.
  • Collaborate with HSES Team members group on initiatives, policies and standards
  • Travel may be required

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Engineering/Management and/or Environmental Engineering/Management.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, preferably in a relevant manufacturing industry
  • Have a technical knowledge of: OSHA, RCRA, DOT, CWA, CAA, TSCA, and other applicable regulations
  • Experience with behavior-based safety (e.g. STOP, BST) and RCA incident investigation techniques
  • Experience in implementing comprehensive health, safety, and environmental projects
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Knowledgeable about best practice safety and environmental approaches.
  • PC skills; Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); and other applicable applications
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in industrial HSES compliance management

Must be expert in Federal Environmental or OSHA regulations. Must be expert or willing to become expert in Delaware and local environmental regulations through training and education.



Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management, Industrial Safety, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene or related discipline or equivalent experience. 
  • Minimum of 5 -10 years Safety and/or Environmental Experience.
  • Previous Manufacturing Experience preferred. Regulated manufacturing experience highly desirable. 
  • Experience developing safety programs including working through high performance teams to successfully implement initiatives, and the ability to implement behavior-based safety programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within and through organization using influence and client management skills. 
  • Demonstrated Voluntary Protection Program development and implementation preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication, computer and presentation skills
  • Professional certifications or advanced degree a plus (CSP, MS in HSES related field etc.)

  • Site personnel, contractors and regulatory agencies

Work Environment

  • Some travel may be required for HSES audits and/or training. Normally minimal travel will be required.
  • Ability to maneuver under/over equipment to do inspections.
  • Work schedule is projected to be typical business hours. Some work might be required on night shifts and weekends.
  • Exposure to health risks or conditions that may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
