Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Packaging Manager, works closely in teams to develop packaging solutions assigned in Edgewell’s personal care product portfolio supporting Liquid Fill Packaging brands: Wet One’s, Shave Prep and Sun Care categories. Brands include Banana Boat, Hawaiian Tropic, Wet One’s, Edge, Skintimate and more! This individual will support packaging development for innovation, sustainability, cost savings and base business continuity projects. This position will also serve as a key contributing member on cross functional business teams and support the development of product/package concepts from idea exploration through feasibility and ultimately implementation.

 

Accountabilities

  • Manages assigned Package Engineering projects, working with brand and project teams, to meet category objectives and project ship to trade dates.
  • Develops, engineers, and tests packaging components and modifies as necessary to meet consumer requirements, functional parameters, sustainability, cost targets, manufacturing & shipping requirements.
  • Uses data and packaging tools to support recommendations.
  • Will lead package component project investigations and assist in root cause determination.
  • Executes new package designs and performs package component testing and qualification, working with suppliers, from engineering drawings to models & prototypes, through to unit and production tooling.
  • Provides packaging options for team down selection and offers clear risk mitigation strategies associated with each design so the best option can move forward.
  • Provides technical input to package design process, program management timelines, and assures package components are designed for manufacturing acceptability, while incorporating aesthetic brand elements. Conducts and reports results of line and qualification trials for components and finished goods production.
  • Demonstrates ability to problem solve and troubleshoot in both manual and automated production environments.
  • Clarifies any project risks & technical issues and details mitigation plans to team members and management.
  • Utilizes appropriate investigative tools (i.e. test results), good engineering design principles, and GMP’s when investigating issues and recommending corrective actions.
  • Works with manager to ensure the Packaging development process is functioning efficiently by assessing current processes and identifying ways to streamline or improve for the benefit of the Pkg community.
  • Supports product & quality dispensing challenges on projects by demonstrating strong collaboration with internal partners and external suppliers to take calculated risks to make improvements.
  • Creates and presents reports for management and other internal groups. Reports include supplier trips, supplier audits, innovation mining, competitive analyses, and current technical status updates.
  • Supports investigation of consumer complaints (customer/consumer) to meet applicable standard operating procedures.
  • Writes, updates, and approves New Packaging specifications, Bill of Materials, Packaging Assembly Specs.

 

Required Education, Skills, and Experience

  • Minimum BS in Packaging Engineering or related fields; (Chemical, Mechanical, and Process Engr).
  • 3 years minimum experience working in a packaging related field, ideally with consumer products companies.

 

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of packaging components and properties including - aerosols, spray & lotion pumps, closures, bottles, extruded/laminate tubes, flexible film laminations, airless systems/pumps, sticks, paperboard cartons, and base plastic processing technical knowledge in injection molding, blow molding and cast and blown films
  • Project Management Experience and structured problem-solving skills in Validations, DOE’s, and Root Cause Analysis
  • Demonstrated consistent performance as a junior Packaging Engineer leadership potential
  • Leading and collaborating all Pkg team responsibilities with cross-functional teams locally and Globally
  • Experience presenting project plans, risk analysis, and technical recommendations to Sr. Management
  • Good problem solving and time Management skills
  • Knowledge of Packaging Validation steps & requirements for filling/converting equipment
  • Experience in an FDA related regulated products a plus
  • PLM SAP based spec development or similar component spec software required
  • Excellent communication skills, using written and verbal platforms to internal and external stakeholders
  • Good computer skills – Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project/PowerPoint/Excel/Teams, CAD design a plus
  • Working knowledge of purchasing of packaging components and external supplier engagement a plus

 

Working Relationships

  • Close relationships required with Product Development, Marketing, Procurement, Operations, Commercial team, Safety, Regulatory, Consumer Affairs, Process and Plant Engineering, Corporate Quality, Legal and all related R&D functions.
  • External engagement will include Suppliers and Contract Manufacturers

 

Work Environment

  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time (line trials, auditing, pkg testing lab)
  • Ability and willingness to travel, as in the execution of the duties of this position the employee may travel approximately 15-20%, or slightly more, of their work time
  • Ability to work on site according to applicable Edgewell work policies
  • Work schedules may vary from typical business hours
  • Department/company is currently working in a hybrid model for applicable roles that requires some in office presence balanced with a flexibility to work some days from home
  • Exposure to health risks or conditions that may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment

 

The salary range for this position is $68,000 - $102,000. Actual base salary offered to a candidate may vary based upon factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance.
